ASUU Rules Out Fresh Strike, Warns That Lecturers Not Casual Workers

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has opted not to direct its members to embark on a fresh round of strike, over the pro-rata payment of their October salaries.

But ASUU, whose National Executive Council met overnight in Abuja, regards the pro-rata payment of salaries of lecturers of federal universities, as an aberration.

ASUU president, professor Emmanuel Osodeke, in a statement issued after the meeting on Tuesday, says the modality for paying the October salaries portrays lecturers as daily paid workers.

Osodeke however, says that the university teachers are intellectuals and not casual workers.

According to ASUU, the pro-rata payment of salaries to lecturers, is unprecedented in the history of universities oriented labour relations.

The union seeks the understanding of students, parents and genuine concerned stakeholders as it continues to pursue positive resolution of the avoidable crisis within the ambit of legality.

In the process, ASUU says it would not compromise the interest and welfare of Nigerian intellectuals.
