Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has, again, extended the warning strike by lecturers in Nigeria’s public universities by twelve more weeks.
The warning strike started in late February 2021 to protest the failure of federal government to fully implement the 2009 and 2020 agreements signed with federal government.
ASUU president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, announced the extension of the warning strike to newsmen after the end of a meeting of the union’s national executive council, held overnight on Sunday in Abuja.

Osodeke says the extended strike, which took off at midnight of May 9, aims at giving federal government more time to address the demands of the striking lecturers.
ASUU president accused federal government of not addressing the demands since the warning strike began and adding that ASUU is yet to be invited to a meeting proposed by the labour minister.
According to the union, its demands which led to the strike and subsequent extension by twelve more weeks include the implementation of the 2009 agreement, the release of approved fund for revitalization of federal universities and the acceptance of the university transparency and accountability solution platform for payment of lecturers’ salaries.
Others are promotion arrears of lecturers in states universities, arrears of earned allowances and the proliferation of universities.
