Appeal Court Discharges, Acquits IPOB Leader, Presidency May Appeal Verdict

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been discharged and acquitted by an appeal court in Abuja.

The court on Thursday declared his abduction from Kenya to Nigeria to face trial for sedition, after he jumped bail, as illegal.

Justice Oludotun Adetope-Okojie reading the judgement, revoked the April 8,2022 of a federal high court, and dismissed all the 15 count charges filed against the IPOB leader.

The appellate court faulted federal government for failing to follow the due process in extraditing Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria, thereby rendering all the charges against him null and void.

Meanwhile, attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, has said that the IPOB leader was discharged by the court of appeal and not acquitted.

According to Malami, what the appellate court based its judgement upon was the a single issue of Kanu’s extradition from Kenya, while the charges filed against him before jumping the bail in 2015 were still pending.

The attorney general said federal government would continue to pursue the pending charges, while considering other options on the appeal court’s judgement.
