About 100,000 Nigerian Students Depart For UK Universities In Past Five Years

Almost 100,000 Nigerian students left the country and enrolled in United Kingdom (UK) universities in the past five years, according to data from the higher education statistics agency.

According to the agency, 10,685 students left Nigeria for UK universities in 2017, and 10,810 the following year.

In 2019, 13 thousand and 20 Nigerian students also left Nigeria for the UK universities, and 21, 305 in 2020.

The figure reached a peak of 44,195 last year, amidst the eight month strike by lecturers in Nigeria’s public universities.

The population of Nigerian students in the UK universities was ranked third after those of China and India.

According to statistics by SBM Intelligence, Nigerian students and their spouses contributed nearly £2 billion to the British economy in the 2021/22 academic session.

While many Nigerians – both students and professionals are still battling to relocate abroad, the Rishi Sunak-led British government is working on new restrictions that will check Nigerian students seeking to study in the UK varsities from bringing their spouses and children.
