Abiola Was Denied Presidency Because Of Jealousy Says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that jealousy prevented the proclaimed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential poll, Late Bashorun Moshood Abiola, from being declared as Nigeria’s president.

Obasanjo stated this during the centenary celebration of the Baptist Boys High School (BBHS), Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to Obasanjo, jealousy did not allow Ogun State to produce another elected president.

Obasanjo explained that if Abiola had been declared as president in 1993, Baptist Boys High School (BBHS) would have produced two Nigeria’s elected president.

He said if one more old students of Baptist Boys High School (BBHS) could become an elected president, it would be kept permanently in the school.

Obasanjo said this was a challenge that up and coming old students should brace up to meet.

According to Obasanjo, without BBHS, he would not have been what he is today. “Again, reminding us always of our character and conduct. We could proudly say BBHS with education plus. And for me, it stood me in good stead throughout my life so far. Without BBHS, I would not have been what I am,” he said.

“We must impact with humility, honesty, integrity, wisdom, courage, competence and fear of God – these must continue to be our characteristics and our attributes to make a change for good wherever we are. We must be different.”

The comment of the former military head of state comes about three decades after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election by then head of state, Ibrahim Babangida. His comment also comes just a few weeks before the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

Recall that this is not the first time Obasanjo would make a public comment on the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. He made a similar comment at a function in Abeokuta in April 2021.
