Abiodun Requests Approval Of State Assembly To Recover Stamp Duty Revenue

Governor Dapo Abiodun has forwarded letters to the Ogun State house of assembly to approve his requests for the recovery of the backlog of stamp duty accruing to the state, between January 2015 and December 2022.

The governor also wants approval for the payment of a five percent consultancy fee to A.J.O financial service, hired by nigerian governors forum to access the unremitted backlog.

Another request of the governor is for the reconciliation of the unathorised debit deducted from the accounts of state governments by the federation account allocation committee, and unutilized balance due from the authorized debits.

The two letters of the governor were read by the speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, during the Tuesday plenary of the assembly.

According to the governor, all the 36 state houses of assembly are exploring out-of-court settlement of a case filed by the state governmnents, seeking the refund of the monies collected as stamp duty payable to the states.

Abiodun also said federal government had established through a reconcilatory process, that states were debited without recourse to proceeds from the excess crude oil accounts, petroleum profit tax and royalty bill.

According to the governor, federal government had already disbursed 40 per cent of the reconciled account to states through the federation acount allocation committee.

The governor wants the approval of the state assembly to empower it to recover the unpaid 60 per cent of unauthorized debts deducted yet to be refunded.
