Abia State Assembly Taken Over By Police, Amidst Speaker’s Impeachment

Abia state house of assembly has deepened in leadership crisis  as the impeached speaker, Chinedum Orji, insisted he is still the speaker.

Orji at the assembly plenary on Tuesday, with some of the lawmakers to impeach the deputy speaker, Ifeanyi Uchendu, who presided over his impeachment hours ealier.

The deputy speaker at a plenary held at a secret location in Umuahia, purportedly attended by 18 out of the 24 members of the house on tuesday had impeached the speaker.

They also elected Chinedum Apugo as the new speaker.

But the impeached speaker later on Tuesday reconvened the assembly with nine members had announced the suspension of his deputy, and eight other lawmakers from the house, withouit pay.

He claimed that two other members out of the country had declared support for him to remain in office.
