80 Percent Of Pupils In Primary Schools Are In Public Schools
One out of every five pupils in Nigeria’s primary schools is in public primary schools.
Also, public primary schools accounted for 50 million, 36 thousand out of a total of 113 million, 460 thousand primary schools nationwide.
Executive secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, said the data was sourced from the report of the 2018 national personnel audit conducted in all the basic schools in the country.
According to him, out of 27.88 million enrolled in primary schools, only 5.6 million or twenty per cent are in private schools, while others are in public schools.
The NUC executive secretary said the future of education in Nigeria would depend largely on the quality of its primary school education.
He asks major stakeholders to join hands with government to address the challenges facing primary education in the country.
