25 New Political Associations Seek Registration as Political Parties, Ahead Of 2027 Polls

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is considering fresh applications from political associations seeking to be registered as political parties.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, said 25 of such applications had been submitted ahead of the 2027 polls.

He made this known on Tuesday at the public presentation of the needs assessment of political parties in Nigeria, organized by the European Union and Kukah Centre.

Yakubu recalled how the INEC pruned down the large number of political parties from over 90 to 19 that contested in the 2023 polls.

According to him, the submission of new registration applications was an indication that political parties in Nigeria are functioning well.

But the founder of the Kukah Centre, Bishop Matthew Kukah disagreed, as he regards the political scene in Nigeria as a forest of chaos.

He blamed the situation on the lack of collective political memory due to the prolonged military rule.

The cleric also said the quality of actors in today’s political space was an indication of no mentor or guardians in Nigeria’s political history.

The quality of the actors suggests very clearly that there are no teachers, no guardians, and no mentors in our political history.

The result is that we are witnessing an end to the age of innocence and the nobility of politics.

This is not an inspiration to the younger generation who are likely to shun politics with the understanding that this is how things have been since the beginning.
