Disagreements Threaten Proposed Ijebu State.

The proposed creation of Ijebu State from Ogun State is facing a major hurdle, as disagreements over the state’s name and capital threatens to derail the process.

Discussing the issue on Rockcity’s flagship programme, Day Break Show on Tuesday, former Deputy Governor Of Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Kaka said the committee led by the Awujale Of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona (GCON), has concluded that the new state should be named Ijebu State with Ijebu-Ode as its capital.

This stance was strongly opposed by comrade Kayode Segun-Okeowo, a leader of Sagamu youths, who also featured on the Radio programme. The youth leader argued that Sagamu should serve as the capital due to its rapid economic and infrastructural development over the past years.

Senator kaka said the agitation for the creation of Ijebu state has been ongoing for over 30 years and added that all traditional rulers are in support of the idea stating that Ijebu-ode has always been the capital of Ijebu province which included the whole Ogun East Senatorial District due to its centrality and accessibility.

Tracing the history of Remo, the youth leader said the Remo people migrated from Iremo quarters in Ile-Ife and would not allow their identity to be undermined arguing that Remo is distinct from Ijebu and should not be under Ijebu.

Senator Kaka urged all stakeholders to pray for the realization of Ijebu State arguing that the Ijebu people are united by one language adding that the Remo people could pursue any other agenda that is best suited to them.
