Stop eating ponmo, minister tells Nigerians

Livestock’s development minister, idi mukhtar (/muk-ta/), has cautioned Nigerians against the consumption of burnt cow skin, popularly called ponmo. The minister says the consumption of cow skin poses serious risk to human body. The minister speaking on a television programme said the preparation of ponmo is not hygenic. He said burning cow skin with kerosine or engine oil to produce ponmo was harzadous to human health

The minister said the way cows are being slaughtered in Nigeria is negatively impacting the leather industry in Nigeria. He said the cow skin if properly processed, could be used by the leather industry to produce belts, bags and other leather products
