President Muhammadu Buhari has pleaded with the APC state governors to allow him to choose the APC presidential candidate ahead of the party’s presidential primaries which will start on Monday, next week.
Buhari told the governors to give him the reciprocity to choose the APC presidential candidate like they pick their successors in their respective states.
The president, speaking at a meeting with the governors on Tuesday at the presidential villa, Abuja, says that consultations on the issue will continue before the national convention.
Ruling out the consensus mode of primaries, Buhari says that only true APC member deserves the party’s presidential ticket in a free and fair primaries.
Such a candidate, according to him, should be the one who will give Nigerians a sense of victory and confidence, even before the 2023 polls.
He urges the governors to allow their interests and that of the party leaders to converge, and to be mindful of the changing dynamics of the environment, the expectation of Nigerians and the global community.
He promises to continue consultations to ensure that all the presidential aspirants and stakeholders are brought on board to the APC national convention.
According to the president, this will ensure that any anxiety occasioned by different factors is effectively brought under control, while the party come out stronger ahead of the 2023 polls.
