Patrick Utomi Tasks Journalists on Responsible Reportage

A professor of political economy, Patrick Utomi, has asked Nigerian journalists to be mindful of the impact of their reports on the society.

Utomi wants journalists to ensure clarity in their reports so that members of the public would not have a misconception of their reports.

The political economist spoke at a symposium to mark the 2022 world communication day, organized by the Abeokuta Catholic Diocese on sunday,  at the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral, Adatan in Abeokuta.

Patrick Utomi says that Nigeria needs journalists who are versatile to give accurate information on challenges facing the country.

Also speaking at the symposium, Ogun state information commissioner, Waheed Odusile asked journalists to equip themselves with the basic ethiscs of journalism ethics to ensure proper reportage of events to the public.

According to the commissioner, journalists are expected to impact knowledge to the public, while being mindful of the information that they are disseminate to the public.

Another discussant, Doctor Niran Malaolu, the CEO of Rockcity FM, says that it is unfortunate that in Nigeria, journalists are being blamed for what goes wrong in the society.

Malaolu says that journalists do not manufacture news, but often report what they see or hear, adding that it is left for the society to accept the reality of their society as reflected in the report.

Also, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, the provost of Nigerian institute of journalism, asks members of the public to support journalists, by giving them the correct information to ensure fairness, equity and balanced reportage.

The chief host of the symposium, the bishop of the catholic diocese, Most Reverend Peter Olukayode Odetoyinbo says the church must celebrate the media for their impact on the society.
