Obasanjo Says He Never Run After Power, But Power Runs After Him

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said his allegiance would continued to be Nigeria and Africa.

Obasanjo says he is a pan Africanist, and will never be associated with anything that is not Nigeria or Africa.

He spoke at a symposium held to mark his eighty fifth birthday anniversary organized by the Kegite club at the Olusegun Obasanjo presidential library complex, Abeokuta.

The former president also said he never ran after political power because he was trained as a soldier to distant him from politics.

According to him, soldiering and politics don’t go together, but when he was stuck between soldiering and politics, he always ran away from politics.

The former president, however, said that power had continued to run after him, until he could no longer escape from it.

Obasanjo made the clarification, after one of the speakers at the symposium, Doctor Yemi Farounbi, a seasoned broadcaster, recalled that Obasanjo always ran away from power.

According to Farounbi, Obasanjo in 1976 first rejected offer to become the head of state, after the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed, and from the PDP to run as its presidential candidate in 1999 polls.

He likens Obasanjo to the biblical David who did not want to become king, but had the value of a king.
